In Memory of Mrs. Doris June Major

1927-2007

"Ma Major" always enjoyed
MCFSA days.

Doris June Major, age 79, retired in North Carolina after serving her adult life as a staff member at Mount Carmel High School in Vancleve Kentucky. She died at WakeMed Cary Hospital in Cary NC on Thursday, March 1, 2007. Her death was the unexpected result of a fall in her home on the previous day.

She was born on June 26, 1927, in Colbert GA, to the late Sidney and Ethel Smith. She graduated from Mount Carmel High School in May 1947 and the Kentucky Mountain Bible College in May 1950. Following her graduation she was united in marriage to James Paul Major on June 2, 1950, together they served the Lord in the Kentucky Mountain Holiness Association. They also were blessed as they raised four children in a loving Christian home. After the early death of her beloved husband in 1978 she joyfully continued productive work at Mount Carmel. Along with her daughter-in-law Zona and the rest of her family she was again saddened by the sudden loss of her second son Timothy in 1987. Failing health forced her retirement from her life's work in March 2001. She moved to North Carolina to live with her oldest son for her remaining years, and even with a body that was failing, she continued to the end with a keen mind. She was ever thinking of her family and praying and dreaming of her home, friends and work which she missed so much in Kentucky.

Doris is survived by three of her four children, the oldest daughter Darlene Waldron of Syracuse NY, her son Samuel and his wife Alice of Apex NC, and her daughter Esther Mishoe and her husband Arthur of Alpharetta GA; four grandchildren, Stephen Waldron, Christian Major, Tina Major and Alison Gilbert; two sisters, Sue Bromirski of Bristol CT, Barbara Davidson of Chesterfield SC, and one brother Grady Smith of Kannapolis NC. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. In addition to her parents and her beloved husband Paul she is preceded in death by her second son Timothy, two sisters Sidney and Betty, and two brothers Bill and Hugh.

The funeral service for Doris June Major was held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at the Mount Carmel High School Auditorium. The Rev. Robert Cundiff, pastor and friend officiated. Doris was buried at the Lawson Cemetery beside her husband and son. In lieu of flowers, a gift in memory of her life work can be made to Mount Carmel High School, PO Box 2, Vancleve, KY 41385.

We would like to thank her doctors and the staff at the Cary Kidney Center for their care over the last several years. And a huge thank you to all the staff at the WakeMed Cary ED for their compassion and care for Doris and her family in those final hours.

I WILL NEVER LEAVE THEE,
NOR FORSAKE THEE.

Hebrews 13:5

These are words of a pamphlet found by her family on her table the day she passed...

I'm never alone in the morning

As I rise at the break of day,

For Jesus who watched through the darkness

Says, "Lo, I am with you alway."

I'm never alone at my table

Though loved ones no longer I see;

For dearer than all who have vanished

Is Jesus who breaks bread with me.

I'm never alone through the daylight,

Though nothing but trials I see.

Though the furnace be seven times heated

The 'form of the fourth' walks with me.

I'm never alone at the twilight

When darkness around me doth creep

And spectors press hard round my pillow

He watches and cares while I sleep.

I'm walking and talking with Jesus

Each day as I travel along.

I'm never alone. Hallelujah!

The joy of the Lord is my song.
